"It is unobtrusive, just a big square box. Its weapon is a 74 cm long flat ridge. It can move and attack, simple and practical. I just want to tell everyone that King of Bots is a stage for the participation of all people."
— Wu Yulu explains the design and motivation behind WU66's entry (Mech+ subtitles)

吴老六十六 (romanized as Wú lǎo liùshíliù, translated as Wu Lao Sixty-Six or WU66) was a heavyweight robot from Tongzhou, Beijing, China, which competed in Season 1 of King of Bots. It was entered by 56-year-old Wu Yulu and his wife, Wu Sihai, but lost to the British Suspension in its only battle.

WU66

WU66 was a box-shaped robot with a low ground clearance on all sides, featuring a raised rectangular section at the back and a black and orange paint scheme. Its primary weapon was a 74cm-long bar spinner (described as a 'flat ridge') with a maximum rotational speed of 1,000rpm, positioned off-center from the robot's body. While its spinner dealt reasonable damage - destroying several objects in test runs - WU66's overall design lacked a self-righting mechanism. Additionally, the wheels used proved unsuitable for the arena's steel floor, resulting in low speed and frequent traction issues.

As a result of its shape, WU66 was positioned on its back end in some promotional shots.

The Team[]

Co-captain Wu Yulu, 56 years old at the time of Season 1, had spent almost four decades creating 'entertainment robots' of varying sizes and designs. The first machine, WU1, was completed in 1978, with most of Yulu's robots going on to appear at various exhibitions in China and around the world. The lineage also influenced WU66's name, with it being the sixty-sixth robot Yulu (affectionally nicknamed "Mr Robot") had completed by the time of the season's initial airing.

Suspension vs WU66

WU66 is trapped against the wall

In its first battle, WU66 fought the British entry, Suspension. It started slower, and was slammed by Suspension, and controlled around the arena. Sparks flew as WU66's bar skimmed the top of Suspension, but the British machine rolled WU66 into a Grinder, which then reversed into the hazard to sustain further damage. WU66 finally fled, but Suspension drove it back into the Grinder for further damage. Suspension then pinned WU66 against the wall, and survived one final blow from the bar spinner before rolling it against the arena spikes.

"I chose the wrong wheels when I made this robot. The playing field is made of iron, which is not skidproof at all. So, the wheels were completely out of control."
— Wu Yulu explains the traction issues costing WU66 (Mech+ subtitles)

As a possible consequence of its traction issues, WU66 was unable to drive away from the spikes. A 10-second countout was initiated, eliminating it in the first round by knockout.

Wu Yulu: "I used to make robots a lot. But I have never tried to make a combat robot. They're all entertainment robots. They can pull a cart or paint. This is my first time making a robot like this with no experience."
Wu Sihai: "We had a lot of confidence before the game. But [laughs] we let everyone down. [more laughter]"
Wu Yulu: "This robot is not good enough in every aspect. Well, I've tried my best."
Wu Sihai: "Wu, I will always support you. You'll get better at it."
— The Wu team's post-match interview (Mech+ subtitles)

Following WU66's exit, the Wu team received applause from other roboteers as they transported their machine back into the pits. Wu Yulu expressed that he would 'definitely attend' a future season with a 'much stronger' robot if the opportunity arose. However, this would prove to be the Wu team's only appearance in King of Bots.
