"Shadow Ring Blade has only one goal, which is to defeat all opponents. There is no failure in the dictionary of youth, only challenges."
— Hurricane captain Lin Hao (Season 1, Episode 2, Mech+ subtitles)

疾影环刃 (Jí yǐng huán rèn, translated as Shadow Ring Blade, also referred to as Hurricane) was a robot from Zhengzhou, China, which competed in the first season of King of Bots. A student entry from the city's Light Engineering Institutes, it lost in the first round against Deep-Sea Shark.

Hurricane with its team

Hurricane was a black, octagonal-shaped robot armed with a large overhead spinner. The four-sided weapon, rotating at 1,000rpm, offered a complete 360-degree attack range, with damage being inflicted through solid white hammer heads on each end. To maximize control while the spinner was operating, 'four-bar stabilization technology' of an undetermined kind was utilized.

Though Hurricane proved to have a powerful spinner, and the robot had a top speed of 2.8 meters per second (10.08km/h or approximately 6.26mph), it struggled to attack once it lost the use of its weapon in its solitary fight.

The Team[]

Hurricane's team (referred to in the Mech+ version as Wind Chasers) was formed by students from the Light Engineering Institutes of Zhengzhou (LEIZ). The team, captained by 'Class of 2015' student Lin Hao, had prior experience creating several robots through the institutes' robotics laboratory, including machines specialized for underwater, 'takeaway' delivery, security, agricultural, bomb disposal and firefighting purposes. Hurricane, however, would be their first attempt at a machine built for robot combat events.

Robot History[]

King of Bots (Season 1)[]

Hurricane first appeared in Episode 2, where it fought Deep-Sea Shark in the first round.

Deep Sea Giant Shark damaged

Hurricane shears off one of Deep-Sea Shark's drum mounts

In the opening seconds, Hurricane spun its weapon up as Deep-Sea Shark drove straight into it. The two competitors proceeded to exchange several blows with their spinners. One of these collisions resulted in it ripping off one of its opponent's drum mounts. The attack caused Deep-Sea Shark's drum to hit the floor as it drove into Hurricane again. This impact stopped both of their weapons from spinning up, before Hurricane was pushed away from the red square by Deep-Sea Shark.

Both robots separated, after which Hurricane continued to strike Deep-Sea Shark with its weapon while being rammed and pushed across the arena. One moment resulted in it being held over the flame jets by the Harbin Institute of Technology entry. Eventually, Hurricane succeeded in pushing Deep-Sea Shark against the wall spikes, but not without briefly getting itself pinned under them. The two competitors continued pushing and dodging each other until time ran out, with the battle going to a Judges' decision. Despite inflicting major damage, Hurricane lost the decision through the greater control displayed by Deep-Sea Shark.

"It knocked out HIT's weapons. Our weapon also suffered some damage, but in comparison, they damage they suffered was greater. It's a pity, a narrow defeat."
— Lin Hao on Hurricane's performance and loss to Deep-Sea Shark (Mech+ subtitles)
