Big Potato (Chinese: 大土豆, romanized as Dà tǔdòu) was a robot from Boston, the United States of America, which competed in the 2018 series This is Fighting Robots. It entered partway through the show as one of the 'challenger' robots, but was not featured in the main series after losing a 'tryout' match between two other 'challengers'.
Design[]
Big Potato was a two-wheel drive robot armed with a thick single-toothed vertical spinning disc. Its shape included a broad front wedge - one of the most heavily-armored in This is Fighting Robots - and externally-mounted wheels, though it was capable of running inverted. As Big Potato's disc could not work as effectively upside-down, the robot could self-right by driving into the arena walls. The dark brown paint scheme included full-sized graphics with an image of a baked potato, hence the name.
Robot History[]
This is Fighting Robots (Season 1.5)[]
Big Potato's appearance in the main series was very limited, with only a preview clip of it being wheeled into the arena being shown at the end of Episode 6.
In content which was exclusive to Youku VIP subscribers, Big Potato fought a 'tryout' match between itself and fellow 'challengers' Dragon King and Formula. This was to determine which of the three international competitors would qualify for the main 'challenger' round aired in Episode 7.[2]
Big Potato started aggressively by trying to ram Formula, only to drive itself up the front end of and be pushed back by the UK entry. Fellow American compatriot Dragon King intervened by grabbing Formula from the side, easing the pressure off Big Potato as the three machines shuttled to and from the arena perimeter. Big Potato tried to get its disc into contact with Dragon King's left track, but could not do so. Another head-on drive at Formula caused it to be flipped over by the latter in a backwards somersault.
Big Potato landed on the claw of Dragon King, before turning away and bumping into the wall in the arena corner. Dragon King pulled Big Potato back to bring one of its circular saws down on its top panel, at which point Adam Bercu reported that Big Potato was no longer fully mobile. Big Potato turned intermittently and spun its disc up while Formula threw Dragon King into the wall spikes, after which it was counted out by its referee.
This knockout elimination consigned Big Potato to third place, in a melee ultimately won by Dragon King. As a result, it was not chosen to compete in the main 'challenger' round.
